Linda VivasArtist's Statement Artist’s Intent “Every painting I show publicly works quietly, like ripples on a pond, spreading ideas faintly but steadily. The universal energy coming through my art can transfer to a receptive person for the good of all. I love to show nature in attunement with the principles of the universe. I try to celebrate and promote life and to increase awareness and humility in the viewer and myself. In my work, I recognize and illustrate both outer and inner worlds, the mundane and the spiritual, and the interaction of these two dimensions or binaries, which in itself creates transformation. My art has been inspired by the unsung postmodern revolution of thought. Scientists have recently discovered incredible facts, which refute our rigid modern thinking in practically every discipline. This new whole thinking allows us to live with more presence: more awareness of the past, present, and future, and with a deeper connection to the cosmos and everything around us. According to postmodern thought, the universe is structured like a chaotic network of binaries or polarities, and for every fixed there is an ambiguous. One polarity emphasized in Western Art is nature versus culture. Literate Westerners have created human culture as a result of a great revolutionary advance in our thinking, developed through evolution. And we humans have fought our fear of nature with a manmade culture. I find that two important concepts in this regard are equilibrium and transformation of binaries. Equilibrium is the point of balance between two binaries, a state that is often temporarily achieved in the dynamic process of life. Transformation of binaries occurs during the repetitive magnetic attraction/ repulsion movement of the binaries—one of the principles of the universe. In my work, I try to show the equilibrium and/or attraction/repulsion of the binaries rather than the versus. As a result, my current paintings appear at once sensual and intellectual, natural and cultural, physical and mental, holistic and iconic, authentic and ironic, optical and ethereal, eclectic and classic, mundane and spiritual, depicting both inner and outer worlds—the poles pulsating in a healthy balance to celebrate transformation through interaction, diversity, interdependence, spontaneity, history, nature, freedom, and understanding. I am moved by our era’s new holistic thinking—more awareness of the past, present, and future, with a deeper connection to the cosmos and everything around us, while contrasting with other postmodern phenomena. I try to illustrate this new awareness with phenomena like expanding or limiting context from prehistoric to future to space to microscopic to fantastic dimensions. Most importantly, it is my intention to include what are called responsible living symbols in my art in order to manifest a new cultural ethos.”—Linda Vivas Artist’s Education and Employment As postmodern expressions, Linda Vivas’s paintings exhibit a passion for life in its many contexts.
