Bob Swanson / Swanson ImagesMy career was born when my father gave me a Kodak Brownie camera and showed me how to use it, shooting our New York environment and family. We made a dark room in the bathroom. I became photo editor of my high school newspaper (circulation about 10,000 a month) and studied photo journalism as well as engineering. During summers, I assisted Knaster - Iceland Studios off 5th Avenue in Manhattan with Revlon catalogs, ads, and industrial photography. While working at Knaster, I wandered into Life Magazine's dark rooms to pick up info from professionals who appreciated my interest.
I never dropped photography as an avocation, even while pursuing other interests. In the 60s, I moved to California and started a music career. Barbara Mauritz (a singer) and I formed "Lamb," and we made some records. Bill Graham was our manager, and through him we met Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, and Graham Nash. A truly amazing time. I also got into construction and computers (starting with an Apple 2 Plus in 1978).
In the mid-80s, I returned to photography full-time. In the last 15 years, I have worked with some of the best architects, corporations, and publications in this country.
Bob is a board member of the Siskiyou Arts Council. He is the producer of the Art Giving Heart DVD video, produced by SAC in 2004.
