Gary Pollard Artist's Statement One of my chief goals as an artist is to exercise the creative urge which seems to reside in nearly all of us human beings. I greatly enjoy using the tools and the time tested techniques of woodturners, past and present, in this pursuit. Much of my success as a woodturner/artist is measured by the reaction of you, the observer, to my work. The more you are able to feel the emotion that I have attempted to express in the finished work, the nearer I have come to my goal. I have always loved and enjoyed trees and forests, so using wood and forest products as my medium is a very natural means to communicate a lifetime of awe and respect for the wonders of creation. If any of turned pieces increase your appreciation of beauty and nature or bring some degree of emotion and pleasure to you I will feel greatly rewarded for the many hours and years that have gone into their making. The wood I use, while collected from many sources, is nearly always destined for burn piles, fireplaces or other forms of destruction. I, the woodturner, mount a chunk of this rough wood on my lathe and use the woodturning skills which I have gained through many years to produce a unique, beautiful, collectable wood object. Many other techniques and skills such as pine needle weaving, pyrography, carving, texturing, dying, to name a few, are used in the process. You can view my work in Scott Valley Drug in Etna, Ca., The Marble Rim Gallery in Fort Jones, CA., and the Hardwood Gallery in Ashland, OR.
