Jewel O'BrienArtist's Statement I began my career as an artist in 1998. My promise to myself after retiring from UC Santa Cruz was that I was going to pursue the one thing I longed to do - create art. I strive to portray a mood or a moment in my art. Sometimes the mood or moment is expressed in a symbol, sometimes in an action, and other times in an object. Each piece represents a moment in time: a woman recovering from an injury, religious confusion, or day-to-day obligations. I began by focusing on human form and gesture. Then I started using symbols to express a mood. This has been especially challenging and very satisfying. I continually attempt to find new ways to express mood or moment in symbol as well as form whether using acrylic or printmaking as my medium. Fortunately, I have had some success. I have won several national awards, and have sold several pieces. Art is an important element in everyone's life. Whether it is walking in the woods and appreciating the art of nature, taking brush to canvas, admiring a Mt. Shasta poster or a photograph in a newspaper or magazine, we are exposed to art daily. Unfortunately, art galleries in Siskiyou County are limited, but fortunately for all of us, they are increasing in number, and provide us all the opportunity to expand our encounters with art. 15125 Juniper Peak Road Weed, CA 96094 Phone: (530) 938-0936 Contact Jewel by email at webeob@jps.net The images on this page are titled, from top to bottom: Self Portrait with Broken Leg - Acrylic Cross Series #7 - Acrylic Egg Cook - Acrylic Jewel's work is featured on the Art Giving Heart DVD video, produced by SAC in 2004. ![]()
