Interview: Steven Labrash August 23, 2005 1. How long have you been a resident in Siskiyou County? About nine months. 2. Can you give a short explanation of your specialty or your artistic medium? I have been a musician since I was in sixth grade. I played drums but I had to get rid of my drum set because we were moving to Hawaii. My dad asked if I wanted to get another instrument. It was between bass or guitar and I really liked the guitar. My mom's fiancé taught me two cords. From there I taught myself everything I know. 3. How long have you been making art? Since sixth grade. 4. Do you play music professionally? I have been in two bands that haven't worked out long term. 5. How have you learned your art? I am self taught. 6. Have you had any special mentors that have influenced you and your style? Joe, my mom's fiancé taught me my first two cords. He and I will play together and he says it's like 'the student surpassing the master'. He told me that when we are playing together, he normally wouldn't be able to do that and that I bring out a creative side of him. It's pretty cool. 7. Can you talk a little about your experience as an artist in Siskiyou County? (In other words, what is unique about being an artist in this area?) (Pros and Cons) (economic, cultural, physical/geographic) I think that in Siskiyou County everyone is pretty humble verses in San Diego where I used to live. There is a lot more animosity there. Also, there is not much to do in Siskiyou County which is probably why I am pretty far in my music. 8. Do you feel like living in Siskiyou County has influenced your art? What aspects have you drawn inspiration from? I draw all my ideas from experiences with my friends pretty much. So I would say yes. 9. Do you feel like art in Siskiyou County has any prominent trends or patterns in regards to younger and older musicians? I see kids my age wanting to be in a band and wanting to be really famous. The older musicians are very experienced and even though they are not famous they are still content with what they have. So there is definitely a difference. 10. If you had to describe your style in a few words how would you do this? First 5 words that come to mind?… Very creative and heartfelt. A lot of my music really comes from my heart. 11. What is it about making art and the creative process that you find most interesting or are most passionate about? To me it is just being able to share my music with other people that actually appreciate it and know that I come from my heart and that I am passionate about it. The people who are supportive are just great! 12. How is this apparent in your work if at all? Nobody really gives me much constructive criticism but just hearing them and how they feel about my music makes me want to do more and do better each time. 13. Do you teach art in anyway or are you interested in being a teacher? Yeah, I have thought about it. There are several people in my group of friends who I teach a little bit of my music to. It is awesome for me just seeing them learn. ![]() |
