Margaret KunzlerArtist's Statement
The process of making pottery on the wheel is all about fluidity and movement. Yet much of that quality tends to be lost as the clay dries and is fired. I try to recapture that movement in my designs, through the addition of flowing lines, or the cutting and reshaping of rims. Inspiration comes sometimes from nature, or simply through the movement of the clay itself. I have also been influenced by the pottery of the "Arts & Crafts" movement.
Each stage of the process - from forms on the wheel, to three-dimensional decoration, to glazing and firing - involves its own technical challenges and pitfalls. The way in which all of these elements and variables finally come together is what determines the success of each piece. The finished work often evokes something of the old traditions of art pottery, while hopefully presenting its own new look at the ancient art form.
