Carolyn HarrisArtist's Statement Mt Shasta is my home, but I’ve always had itchy feet. This is reflected in my past writing. When I spent winters on my sailboat, I wrote for Sail Magazine. When I spent winters in New Zealand, I wrote RV in NZ: How to Spend Your Winters South, Way South in New Zealand, then spent the last two winters marketing in the southwest. I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing fiction–particularly historical fiction with strong women characters. I still write short pieces and have a story in Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul (October 2005), but I plan to focus next on my novel, Wednesday’s Child. Seven years ago, I wrote Wednesday’s Child, then submitted it to Squaw Valley Community of Writers. I learned in a hurry I needed a tough skin if I wanted an honest critique. Seven years and almost as many revisions later, Wednesday’s Child is ready for publication. Wednesday’s Child is about Kat, who follows her husband from the comfort of her home in the San Francisco Bay area to a remote logging camp in northern California. As winter approaches, she has a mental breakdown. In 1949, Seasonal affective depression (SAD) was not recognized. If a woman suffered from depression, it was whispered about, called her female problem, and she was left to medicate herself. Often, the medication of choice was alcohol. Kat’s ability to laugh at herself helps her survive by finding a solution that we can understand today–though it was unacceptable in 1949. Depression is a serious problem for many. Sometimes reading about others and realizing you’re not alone, can lighten the load. I slip humor in most of my writing. I think reading about the bitterness of a protagonist dealing with depression can be sweetened by a little humor.
