Joan French

Artist's Statement

Joan French and her husband moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Scott Valley in 1996 when they retired from their careers in printing.

Joan’s interest in art started early, led to a college major in fine arts and later to oil painting, free-lance commercial art, typography, magazine layout and design, and lithography.

When Joan retired, her need to create was met by learning to quilt with the Scott Valley Quilt Guild in Etna, California. Then gardening became a passion until she grew her first gourd. It dried. It needed decorating.

Each gourd is unique and has a personality that needs to be expressed. No gourd has ever been just a blank canvas passively waiting to be painted. It insists on getting its own way. Yes, Joan talks to the gourds and they answer.
