The time has finally arrived to install and unveil the Mt. Shasta Community Peace Mural. Mural coordinator Donna Bringenberg says, "The Mt. Shasta Community Peace Mural is a really beautiful piece of public art that stands 8 feet by 20 feet and depicts what various community members see as their "Vision of Peace." The project is sponsored by the Siskiyou Arts Council and supported by many other public entities; it has no political affiliation. It was born out of the desire to gather the community together to work on a public art project with only one question, "What does peace mean to you?"

The project's artistic director Jenny Reeves Johnson exclaims, "So many community members rallied around this project; many hearts and hands collectively worked together to build a mural that holds their vision for peace."

Bringenberg states, "The mural project has taken 4 years to complete from fundraising to mural raising, and we are pleased to announce that it will have a permanent home on the back lawn of the Chamber and Visitor's Center in Mt. Shasta.

On September 30th at 1pm there will be a public unveiling ceremony at the mural on Lake Street in central Mt. Shasta and everyone is invited to attend. After the ceremony, Kanzango will play at the Stage Door so we can really kick up our heels in celebration.

What is the Community Peace Mural?
The Peace Mural is a community art project in the city of Mt. Shasta, public art for all visitors and area residents. It will be installed at the Visitor's Bureau Park in Mt. Shasta. Community members, young and old will have an opportunity to craft this ceramic mural together. This innovative project enables community members to work on a collective vision of peace that will become a lasting edifice of public art in Mt. Shasta.

Martin Luther King

How is the peace mural being created?
The first step in creating the mural was a visioning process where the participants offered ideas of what "peace" means to them. The program artists incorporated these ideas into a prototype drawing based on the group vision.

On a "clay canvas" participants draw, paint and glaze their unique element. That element will become part of the larger mural composition.

"In a time of war, it may be useful to think about what we mean when we talk of peace. In the town of Mt. Shasta, two women have done just that. They asked their fellow citizens to join them in a group visioning process to come up with images of peace. Then they organized a community art project to represent that vision. News Director Liam Moriarty has more ..... "
