Siskiyou Arts Council and Siskiyou County Arts Activities The Siskiyou Arts Council web site features an updated Calendar of Events, a News & Announcements page, and a wide variety of projects and art events presented by SAC on a regular basis. A monthly email newsletter is sent free to all who sign up for this service.
Click here for SAC Meeting Schedule 2008 Siskiyou Arts Council Projects and Activities 2007 Support for Arts Groups and Events:: The SAC supports local arts groups in a variety of ways, from complete program sponsorship with SAC's 501(c)(3) non-profit status, to coordination, publicity, and insurance support. A few of our partner groups include The Mount Shasta Writers Series, with poetry readings, open mic poetry, workshops and publications; the Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival; support for Mt. Shasta Dance Company's productions, theatre projects at Butteville Elementary School, and much more.. Art Education and The Children's ArtsBus Project: The Siskiyou Arts Council, through its Siskiyou ArtsBus Project, works with organizations and schools to provide arts education and activities for children. The Siskiyou ArtsBus Project's renovated classic school bus is a rolling art classroom. We provide art classes and activities through established programs such as the Family Resource Centers of the First 5 Siskiyou Commission, Recreation Departments, YMCA, elementary schools, art walks and public events. In fall of 2006, and continuing into spring 2007, SAC provided free weekly after-school arts programs in collaboration with First 5 Siskiyou's Family Resource Centers. Communities served included Etna (with Scott Valley Family Resource Center), Yreka (with the Yreka YMCA's Y-Star Program), McCloud (with McCloud Family Resource Center), and Mt. Shasta (with Mt. Shasta Family Resource Center). SAC also provides an ongoing art program at the Court School in Yreka, collaborating wih County Schools and Juvenile Justice. Artists on the Internet!: The SAC web site provides an On-line Artists' Registry, with World Wide Web listings for the artists, writers, musicians and performers of Siskiyou county. This provides rural artists with needed exposure and public access everywhere the internet reaches. Arts organizations, services and businesses are also invited to join the Registry, free to all Friends of SAC. When funding allows, SAC provides free photography, in-depth interviews, and marketing assistance for Siskiyou County artists and performers, all of which is included on the website and used by the participating arists to further their own careers. Voices Between the Mountains: Youth Digital Filmmakers: The SAC sponsors a team of young filmmakers from the towns of Mt. Shasta, Happy Camp and the Karuk Nation will create a film about the geography, culture and history of Siskiyou County. For more information, see the Voices Between the Mountains web page. Siskiyou Arts on TV: The SAC assists in the production of TV shows on the arts in Siskiyou County, in cooperation with MCTV-15, the public access television station in Weed, CA. Shows feature interviews and demonstrations, upcoming arts events, and featured artists, musicians and writers, and are also presented on YCTV. See the Art Giving Heart TV Show / Video for a listing of featured artists on our July 2004 TV program showcasing many of some of Siskiyou County's finest artists and musicians. In fall of 2006, a special program "Page to Stage" documented the local production of the musical "Pirouette." Public Art Projects and the Community Peace Mural: The activities of the Community Peace Mural Project committee in Mt. Shasta are a sponsored program of the Siskiyou Arts Council. The ceramic tile Community Peace Mural was completed by a wide variety of community participants in 2005 as a sponsored program of the Siskiyou Arts Council. Installation is planned for 2006 next to the Mt. Shasta Chamber's Visitor Center. The project was featured on the cover of the annual report for Shasta Regional Foundation. SAC is working with Shasta Regional Community Foundation to bring the new Community Building Arts Initiative to area artists and organizations. Volunteer SAC grantwriters work with programs and projects to seek funding. The Children's ArtsBus Project: Art education throughout Siskiyou County is the focus of this sponsored program of the Siskiyou Arts Council. A donated school bus is currently being renovated as a rolling art classroom, with plans to bring art classes and activities to all county communities and schools. Ongoing art education events, classes and programs are sponsored by the Siskiyou Arts Bus throughout the county. FREE Monthly Arts e-newsletter!: SAC volunteers compile, write and send a free email newsletter at the beginning of each month, highlighting arts event and opportunities countywide. Anyone can sign up for this free service here on our website or at the SAC booth. If your Siskiyou County business or organization has an upcoming arts events, please email us with details so we can help promote it. FREE Online Arts Calendar!: Our new Siskiyou Arts Calendar wiki page provides up-to-date announcements of arts events in Siskiyou County. Volunteers constantly update the calendar with announcements. The SAC calendar page is well linked on the Internet and is one of the most dependable sources of event information in Siskiyou County. Public Performances: The Siskiyou Arts Council Talent Showcase is held annually in autumn at the COS Theater in Weed. This fun-packed evening of entertainment features some of the best talents in Siskiyou County. Auditions are held prior to the event, and past performances have included hula dancers Ann Cramer and Louise Ray, Nuria's Academy Irish dancers and Flamenco dancers, foreign exchange student pianist Irene Pieto Jimenez, singer/songwriters Alex Colvin, Carolyn Hedger, Bernadette Wulf, Melissa & Marc Wright and belly dancer Julie Miyasaki. For information on this year's Talent Showcase, call the Siskiyou Arts Council office 938-0130. Our annual Art in the Garden presents live music by local performers, art and fine food in Mt. Shasta each summer. This annual fundraising party is held on an evening in August at Native Grounds Nursery in Mt. Shasta. SAC hosts fine art and art demonstrations, enterainment, hord d'ouvres and wine tasting to benefit the Siskiyou Arts Council. SAC provides needed support for independent events year round, including the Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival, the Mt. Shasta City Dance Theater, Yreka's ACT and Rd Scarf Society, and Joan Lucas' Senior Theater classes at College of the Siskiyous. In April of 2007, The Yreka Community Theatre will host California's poet laureate Al Young in a presentation with local poets, as Young kicks off his "Top to Bottom" tour of California. SAC is working with the California Arts Council and local organizations to sponsor the Poet Laureate event. Downtown Friday Night Art Walks: The Downtown Friday Night Art Walks program was launched by SAC and JEDI in communities throughout Siskiyou County. Community organizers and volunteers continue these events with SAC assistance. SAC works with volunteers throughout the county to organize and promote the monthly Mt. Shasta Third Friday Art Walk, Weed Arts Evnts, and the annual Dunsmuir ArtWalk. Click here for photos and details. For more information, contact: Mt. Holiday Gala: In 2005, this annual event was held on Valentine's Day weekend, on the evening of Feb. 12 at Senthong's Blue Sky Room in Dunsmuir. Each year SAC hosts a fundraising evening of fine art and art demonstrations, enterainment, hord d'ouvres and wine tasting to benefit the Siskiyou Arts Council. Mt Shasta Writers Series: The Mount Shasta Writers Series is an independent program supported by the Siskiyou Arts Council and area business and individuals in collaboration with Poets and Writers. Regular poetry readings, open mic poetry evenings, workshops and publications are presented, and the new literary journal, Moving Moutain was released in April 2007. Future publications are planned. Past Projects and Events SAC Town Hall Meetings for the Arts 2003: During 2003, the Siskiyou Arts Council held public meetings in Yreka and in Dunsmuir, inviting county musicians, photographers, craftspeople, writers, performers, artists, jewelers, painters, ceramicists, sculptors, and all other creative people who would like to learn more about how the Arts Council works and how people can get involved to advance their creative efforts. Information gathered at these meetings helps SAC plan future activities and community efforts. Watch for Town Hall meetings in other county communities. Mountain Classics: Orchestras, Art and Wine: On July 26, 2003 and on July 5, 2004, the Mt. Shasta Board and Ski Park was the location for a wonderful afternoon of fine music performances, dance and a great art show produced in collaboration with the Siskiyou Artists Association. Double Feature Film Event at COS: On October 25, 2003, SAC presented an action packed program of high mountain courage artistically captured by renowned cinematographers! The Old Edgewood Road Train Trestle Mural Project: The Weed Revitalization Committee is the organization currently holding the flame for this community mural.
